Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These books will help my students understand themselves and the world around them. “Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of a larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.”― Rudine Sims Bishop

My students are amazing, resilient, kind people, and I want to give them literature that they can see themselves in.

I want to give them ways to travel to lands they may never see otherwise. Read alouds are one of the most powerful ways to expose kids to the world. I am a firm believer that reading can change lives.

When my students see other people changing the world, it will only further empower them to want to make waves of change themselves. Seeing others that look like them and come from backgrounds like them will have a great impact on how they see themselves. I want my students to see themselves in books so they know what strong, independent, and brave people they are and will continue to become.

Students become more understanding when they hear about those around them. Books give them a look into lives that are different than their own. By reading, students develop empathy, understanding, and compassion.

Help me give my kids these windows, sliding glass doors, and mirrors.
