Besides the eponymous hotel, others within the 5,989-room Londoner complex include a Conrad, a St Regis and a Sheraton.

Most noteworthy, perhaps, are the 14 suites named after Sands Resorts Macao ambassador and former footballer David Beckham, which “reflect the best of the British star’s discerning style and sophistication and feature all the home comforts he enjoys when travelling”, according to the hotel website. Football memorabilia in each of the suites is a given.

Grand Lisboa Palace Resort

One of the most anticipated arrivals in the Cotai area, the 1,892-room Grand Lisboa Palace Resort, opened its doors in July 2021.

The integrated resort comprises three towers that include The Karl Lagerfeld, the only hotel tower in the world designed by the late fashion icon, and Asia’s first Palazzo Versace Macau.

The late Gianni Versace was known to use much of his own merchandise, an approach that informs these guest rooms, the design of which was overseen by the Italian fashion house that bears his name.

The main tower at the Grand Lisboa Palace Macau houses 1,350 contemporary chinoiserie-style rooms, indoor and outdoor temperature-controlled swimming pools and 11 restaurants, including Chalou, which was given its look by Hong Kong designer Alan Chan and provides yum cha delivered by old-school dim sum trolley service.

TeamLab Supernature

This was one of the most anticipated permanent exhibitions in Macau before quarantine measures halted travel from Hong Kong. Despite the disruption, the “body immersive museum” opened in June 2020.

TeamLab is a Japanese collective composed of artists, programmers, CG animators, engineers, mathematicians and architects who refer to themselves as “ultra-technologists” and create immersive art using digital technology.

The group has had sell-out exhibitions all over Japan and in cities such as Beijing, Miami and São Paulo, Brazil, and Supernature is one of its few permanent exhibitions outside its homeland.

The dimensions of the 5,000 square metre (53,800 sq ft) hall with 8-metre-high ceilings it is housed in help create a multisensory experience wherein the conventional notion of the physical world is challenged by teamLab’s signature style of art.

Studio City Water Park

It’s all about the water slides at this warm-weather Studio City attraction, which opened in 2021 and has been dubbed “the most exciting aquatic adventure Macau has seen”.

The current five attractions include a 450-metre-long river ride and a 20-metre-high tower complex.

Phase two of the project was expected to be completed by December but has been delayed. After completion, the park will sprawl over 250,000 square metres (62 acres) and consist of indoor and outdoor sections.

Restaurants

3 Sardines

A wrought-iron octopus, a collection of oil lamps and a vintage meat scale are just some of the knick-knacks collected by the three young Portuguese chefs (hence the name) in charge of the food at 3 Sardines.

The chefs specialise in petiscos, or Portuguese tapas, with small plates such as fried green beans, braised ribs, octopus salad, beef cubes with pickles and braised chicken gizzards ruling the menu.

Wash it all down with a Super Bock beer and it’s not hard to imagine that you’re sitting in Lisbon.

Sushidan

This is one for omakase fans and those who pay homage to Tokyo’s esteemed Hakkoku sushi restaurant.

Helmed by chef Manato Ueno, a disciple of Hakkoku’s master sushi chef, Hiroyuki Sato, Sushidan promises traditional Edomae nigiri omakase.

With an ever-changing menu, it’s the attention that Manato pays to the rice that will make or break this restaurant.

Mixed with his own formula of vinegar, the rice is balanced to complement the characteristics of a blend of grains selected by the chef according to the season, ensuring that it matches the catch of the day.
