Teenlink’s cover artist this week has been doing 2-D Acrylic Art for 10 years. She said her inspirations are music, novels and stories, and artists Gustav Klint, James Christensen and Frida Kahlo. “When I make art, I like to use what I see in society,” she said.

McLeod is a Fauvist Expressionist artist who has been creating art for about five years. His inspirations are Takashi Murakami, Michelangelo and Peter Max.

John Seminario (vocals), Sergio Mastrocicco (guitar), Brandon Brioso (keys, bass guitar), JB Collesano (rhythm, bass guitar) and Urbano Santos (drums) are all seniors are Monarch.
The rock band has been together about a year and a half. “We like music and like to be in front of people,” they said.
Their influences are Steel Panther, The Ramones, Tenacious D and Cheap Trick.

Gillian Newman

Newman just started painting this year but has been designing and drawing for some time. “I just started painting this year, and it’s definitely a step forward from drawing. It takes a lot more thought and energy for me to paint, but I like it because it is a really powerful way of self-expression to me. Color can really induce emotions, and I look at it as a way of speaking.”

“The band has been around for quite a while now, but recently underwent a change in the line-up of members,” Lathrop said. “A Day To Remember, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Anberlin and, of course, Beyonce Knowles inspire us because we admire their talents and wish to pursue their genres.”

“We love playing shows and playing live,” Elberg said. “We will play anywhere, anytime. All of us love Ska music, and we take it and make it our own. We all have a great time playing music together. We love every minute of it. Music means everything to all of us. Our influences are Streetlight Manifesto, We Are The Union, Less Than Jake [and] Operation Ivy.”

Blair is a bass player who plays Jazz, Funk, Rock, Rap, Soul and R&B.
He has been playing for two years, and his inspirations are Paul Chambers, Brecker Brothers and Larry Gram, among others, as well as local artists and everyday people.

Matt Brown
Fort Lauderdale High senior
Brown is into graphic design, game development and creative lighting design. “I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember, from designing interactive sculptures, giant murals on any blank walls I could find, and transforming rooms into surrealistic, walk-through art as a kid, to all areas of art and design I explore today,” Brown said.
“The way my mind works makes it natural for me to look at everything from a creative perspective. I take things that interest and entertain me, and when I find a creative way to imagine then develop something new, it just feels right.”
Brown’s parents own an advertising agency, “so the tools and encouragement were always there, but mostly I just did something I enjoyed, and nobody said, ‘That’s not how art works,’ ” he said.

Andrew James McCormack
Saint Thomas Aquinas senior
McCormack is a versatile artist. “My art, at the moment, doesn’t focus on any particular idea or medium. I’m experimenting with a variety of medium in order, but I love oil paints,” he said.
He started with doodles, but McCormack said, “I’ve been doing serious art for the past two years now.
“My favorite inspiration is the human figure. Everything about it can express emotion, and I find that an amazing subject and tool.’

Van Zile is a writer. “I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. As a kid I would write out little things about characters in the books I liked. I think I was born doing it,” he said. “As for writing fiction, I’d made a few attempts … but I started doing more and more around eighth grade.”
He said he isn’t sure why he writes. “It’s not something that serves a clear-cut purpose for me. I write almost unconsciously. It’s not necessarily to express myself, or to find success. … For me, it’s like walking, just something that you do because you do it.
Van Zile said he loves Kurt Vonnegut’s books. ” ‘Breakfast of Champions,’ in particular, is my favorite. ‘Crime and Punishment’ by Dostoevsky is probably also in my top three. I’ve always been partial to ‘Lord of the Rings,’ too.”

Jake Denton (junior), Max Van Zile (sophomore) and Austin Pagel (junior) have been playing Classic Hard Rock, Punk and Thrash for about a year, simply for the “enjoyment, the thrill of playing music.”
Their influences are Rush, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Megadeth and The Clash.

Lucas Racine (senior), Kris Alan Carter (sophomore), Mario Escoto (sophomore) and Brandon Berger (a college freshman) play Ska and Reggae.
The band started in June 2010 and recently started playing shows. They formed when Racine’s former band broke up. Carter and Escoto asked him to join the band they were making, and the Eskamoes were born.

Chesney does a lot of pen or watercolor-and-pen art. “I’ve been creating art for a long time,” Chesney said. “It was a fun pasttime when I was younger and found I had a knack for it at 13. I haven’t stopped since.”
Chesney’s inspiration is a mix of different things. “Nature inspired me to draw trees for a long time, and that induced my fascination with veins and the human body.”

Dexter Foster
Foster is a painter and sketch artist. “I’ve been doing art since elementary. I started painting in 9th grade. That was also when I got really serious with my work and saw I had a strong passion for fine art.
” My favorite artist is Caravaggio. He’s the inspiration for most of my early peices. I would always mimic-and still do his use of dramatic lighting and strong facial expressions. I plan to study as an architect, and with my art skills I’ll be able to incorporate them into my designs. which will make me all the more unique.”

Norvelus has been sketching fashion for five years and sewing for two.
She said fashion, for her, is like eating and breathing. “Art was something that was instilled in me from a very young age and I incorporated it into my learning skills, my wardrobe, etc. It’s something I enjoy, and it comes very easily for me.”
Her inspiration comes from fellow artists, designers, shapes, colors and textiles – all aspects that contribute to her creative process of designing.
“I’m the type of artist that is influenced by other artists,” Norvelus said. “I like to be around that atmosphere of creativity and new ideas. It motivates me to create something that tops what the last person just created.”

Kline has been a photographer for about five years. His inspiration is Peter Lik.
“I like taking pictures of landscapes,” he said. “Natural settings and natural light are more beautiful than anything you can create in a studio. I like to get out there and work for my photos.”

Giancola developed a passion for photography after getting involved with it in 2008.
“Most of my photographs are of nature and scenic views, however, I enjoy taking pictures of people and interesting, miscellaneous objects. I hope to develop this hobby into an occupation,” Giancola said.

Jaros has been dancing for 13 years. “A lot of my inspiration comes from the people in my life, such as my family and my friends. My dance mirrors my feeling toward each relationship I have,” she said. “I think hard work is the most important thing in anything you do; my hard work allows me to dance for myself, which is a great feeling.”
