Takuya Kimura Career
Kimura auditioned for Johnny & Associates, a talent agency that recruits and trains young boys to become singers and members of boy bands when he was 15 years old. In the autumn of 1987, twenty young lads, including Kimura, formed a group named The Skate Lads, which was originally formed as backup dancers for a prominent boy band called Hikaru Genji. In April 1988, producer Johnny Kitagawa selected six of the twenty lads to form a new boy band called “SMAP.”
Kimura and his bandmates made their acting debut in the television series Abunai Shonen III in 1988. After acting in various television programs, he first gained notoriety in 1993 when he landed a role in a high-rated television series, Asunaro Hakusho. In Japan, the scene in which he hugged his co-star Hikari Ishida from behind became popular, and a guy clutching a girl from behind was thereafter dubbed “asunaro daki,” which translates as “asunaro hug.” Men in Japan began to imitate his fashion and style beginning in 1994, as garments and fashion items became instant successes, including the thick, black-rimmed glasses he wore in Asunaro Hakusho.
The phenomenon was dubbed the “Kimutaku syndrome” by researchers. He received the Ishihara Yujiro New Artist Award for his performance in Shoot, his feature film debut.
He co-hosted a weekly variety show SMAPxSMAP for 20 years as a member of the boy band SMAP until the group’s dissolution on New Year’s Eve 2016. They received foreign celebrities including Michael Jackson,[26] Madonna, and Lady Gaga[27], as well as Japanese visitors. He has also made cameo appearances in various shows, such as Jimmy: The True Story of a True Idiot on Netflix, and has been a guest on numerous variety shows.
Early in the creation of the action game Judgment, Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio considered casting a prominent actor to play the primary character Takayuki Yagami.
