Dillard senior Christopher Johnson has always had a knack for outrunning his opponents, whether it be on the gridiron or the track.

The four-star running back, who signed with the University of Miami to play football, once again sprinted past his competition at the FHSAA Class 3A state track and field championships at Hodges Stadium the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

For the second consecutive year, Johnson won both the 100- (10.25) and the 200-meter dashes (20.40). They were both personal bests.

“I think I did great,” said Johnson, who broke the state record in the 200 previously held by American Heritage’s Anthony Schwartz of 20.41 in 2018. Schwartz is currently a member of the Cleveland Browns.

“I didn’t really feel pressured (because) I knew I was the favorite in the race, but I stayed humble and took advantage of my opportunity,” said Johnson, who ran for 1,118 yards and 17 TDs, while adding 32 receptions for 280 yards in 2022. “I was already set for school, so I didn’t have to worry about recruiting.”

Johnson was the Sun Sentinel large schools co-track athlete of the year after his junior year after winning state titles in the 100 (10.45) and the 200 (20.78). He had the third-best 200 time in the nation.

“I did it last year too, so it feels the same,” Johnson said. “It was a great season. After I won all my races, I felt very happy with the outcome. I broke the state record in the 200, and I hold the fastest time now. I also had a PR in the 100.”

Johnson had the third-fastest time in the country this season with a 20.40, which he ran at the state championships. Johnson’s 100-meter time was third-fastest in the state and 24th in the country.

Dillard coach Davidson Gill said Johnson put in the work.

“I had a great opportunity to witness this young man grow over the years and leave Dillard as the top sprinter to ever walk this campus.”
