DJ Laz and Joe Ferrero are back.
The two popular South Florida radio personalities have new shows on the dial.
Like Lazarus, DJ Laz has risen again — this time on “Hits 97.3,” WFLC 97.3-FM.
The longtime deejay, whose real name is Lazaro Mendez, previously worked at “Power 96,” WPOW 96.5-FM and “DJ 106.7,” WRMA 106.7-FM. He left WRMA in November and now can be heard “The DJ Laz Morning Show,” which launched last month and runs from 5:30 to 10 a.m. weekdays.
“Hits” was known as “The Coast” until last year, when it shifted to a Top 40 format.
“I’m so pumped to get back to doing what I love, in the city I love. Radio is about to get fun again!” he said in a statement.
So far, Mendez’s show seems similar to his past radio efforts: He banters with co-host Kimmy Bell about the latest pop culture news and frequently references South Florida and his nephew, rap and pop star Pitbull. The show is a mix of English and Spanish humor.
Even though the deejay was off the air, he was in the news in May when a man was killed trying to help free Mendez’s 40-foot power boat, which was stuck on a sandbar off Key Biscayne. Mendez was not charged but faces a civil lawsuit from the family of the victim, Ernesto Hernandez, 23.
Over on “Mega 94.9,” WMGE 94.9-FM, Ferrero became the host of his own morning show on Sept. 8. He joins current host Chanel Gonzalez weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m. and the pair banter in English and Spanish between sets of music.
He said his new show is pan-Hispanic, catering to the multicultural and bilingual listeners of South Florida with his stories about everyday life in the region.
“Things that I can relate to, that’s what the radio should be, making the connection,” he said. “Our show is not so much about ‘I went last night to have a champagne glass with Marc Anthony.’ It’s more like, ‘Yesterday, I was standing in line at a popular restaurant and I was waiting forever.’
“It’s more about identifying yourself with the actual beat of the town instead of ‘I am a celebrity and I am high status.’ “
Ferrero is probably best known in the region for prank calls he made to international leaders including Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez when he co-anchored a morning show with fellow Latin shock jock Enrique Santos more than 10 years ago. Since then, Ferrero has had other morning shows in New York and Fresno, Calif., and most recently worked as a radio consultant.
Ray Hernandez, program director for “Mega,” said Ferrero’s “market knowledge, experience and expertise in mornings will surely elevate us to the next level, while listeners will enjoy a show packed with a combination of laughter, entertainment and their favorite hit songs every morning.”
