It doesn’t matter what species the members of Doing It All/Team Hard Way are fishing for, because if it has fins, they will figure out a way to catch it.

Capt. Mark Lamb, Daryl Deka and Rick Burton won scores of bass tournaments on Lake Okeechobee before joining forces with Capt. Alex Burgess and taking up offshore tournament fishing in 2007.

They won the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo in 2009 with the biggest fish, a 55.5-pound kingfish, and last year won the Rodeo’s top boat title. They also won three sailfish tournaments in 2012, including the Jimmy Johnson National Billfish Championship in Key Largo.

On Saturday, the 35-foot Contender scored its biggest victory yet, winning the Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series as the top boat in a four-tournament competition that featured the best sailfish teams in South Florida.

“This is another check off the bucket list, that’s for sure,” said Deka, of Wellington, whose team finished 12th in the series-ending Final Sail out of Miami to win the Quest by three points over Liquid, which went into the tournament with a five-point lead and finished 20th. Vitamin Sea Too was third, eight points behind.

Sailsmen won the tournament, catching and releasing 15 sailfish Saturday for a two-day total of 21 to earn $130,400. Get Lit was second with 19 releases to win $114,640. Top Vee was third with 18 to win $87,480.

For Deka and Lamb, who won a $25,000 Aquanaut watch by Patek Phillippe as the top captain, the Final Sail wasn’t about money, but about winning the Quest for the Crest, which awarded the crew burgundy sport jackets.

The team had fifth-place finishes in the first two tournaments and a 10th at the Jimmy Johnson after leading the first day.

“We went to Contender to build our boat so we could win a championship and we did it,” Deka said. “I don’t know that it’s all completely sunk in.”

A text Deka received from John Tight put it best: “Freshwater, then saltwater meat tournament champ, now billfish champ. What’s next?”

“It’s all about teamwork,” Deka said. “Everything’s got to work and work well. We catch all our bait, we do everything the hard way and we’re doing it all.”
