Two-time Olympian Frank Shorter will compete in Saturday’s Alamo Kidz 5K Run-Racewalk at Esplanade Park.

The 1972 marathon gold medalist says it’s more than a race: It’s his chance to bring attention to child abuse, of which he was a victim in Middletown, N.Y.

Each $12 race entry fee goes to Kids In Distress, treatment programs for abused and neglected children. The 3.1-mile run is being underwritten by race sponsors, so all the cash benefits the children.

Last year’s run raised funds for the new Kids In Distress Treatment and Living Center. The race had 700 runners.

The run is 8 a.m. in downtown Fort Lauderdale at SW Second Street, across from the Broward Performing Arts Center. The men’s and women’s winners win two American Airlines tickets to anywhere in the country and a rental car for seven days.

Alamo Marketing Director Marc Cannon said that Shorter, 45, the father of seven, donates his time and prizes. Race organizers expect 700 to 1,000 runners.

“This race is very personal to him,” Cannon said. “He is someone who survived it all.”

The Broward County Association of Physical Educators Home Depot 5K Scholarship Run-Walk is Saturday at Lockhart Stadium, 7:30 a.m. The race is being held to raise funds for the BCAPE Scholarship Fund. Entry fees are $8 and $10.

The third FIU-Texaco Ecology 5K, postponed last month because of the hurricane, will be Nov. 22 at the FIU south campus at 8:30 a.m. There is a $2,050 purse. Proceeds benefit the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Environmental Education Center to rebuild its animal clinic, destroyed in the hurricane.
