This is what happens when you win it all.
People ask to see your state championship rings.
Little girls stop you every day and let you know one day they want to be part of the program, too. They promise they’ll keep winning when they are.
Former players stop in during practice and talk to the newest members of the team, trying to drive home the importance of tradition and success. Some of them even become assistant coaches.
Fans have countless questions about everything from uniforms to future opponents.
For the players and coaches at Broward’s three most prestigious girls’ basketball programs — Dillard, Deerfield Beach and South Broward — the similarities don’t end with success on the court. They extend to talent, goals and, of course, expectations.
None of them would have it any other way.
“I don’t consider it pressure. It’s a great opportunity,” Deerfield Beach coach Portia Williams said. “It’s an honor to be working with a program that is so strong and so supported. When you speak of Deerfield girls’ basketball, you want it to be in the same way as Dillard and South Broward.”
Says South Broward coach Sharlene Ferguson, who took over last year after former Bulldogs coach Abby Ward went on to build the program at Monarch: “I think it’s good for the three of us. I know it keeps me on my toes and I’m sure it keeps [Dillard] coach [Marcia] Pinder on her toes and coach Williams on hers. And it only makes the kids better.”
For the past two seasons, teams hoping to win a Class 6A state championship have had to deal with Deerfield Beach. Last year, the Bucks won their second consecutive state title after finishing as the state runner-up in 2002.
And 5A teams outside of Broward aren’t faring any better than their 6A counterparts. Dillard won the state championship last year, eliminating four-time defending Class 5A champion South Broward in the regional final. Before the Panthers went on to win the 2004 title, the Bulldogs had won five of the last six Class 5A championships.
Dillard, which has grown into one of Broward’s traditional powerhouses under longtime coach Pinder, hadn’t won a state championship since 1982. Then came 2004, when the Panthers blew through the playoffs and eliminated South Broward in the regional final before going on to win a state title.
“Some of these girls were living off this program’s past history and I wanted to see them make their own history,” Pinder said. “They wanted to have their names up there and know, that like the others who were here, they did something. They’ll be able to come back here with their kids one day and show them their names up there.”
There’s a definite mutual respect among the three programs. Games against one another, like Tuesday’s game between Dillard and South Broward, are competitive and fans pack gyms to see them.
For the players who pull on the jerseys from any one of the three storied programs, they know no matter who they play their school’s legacy means they get no breaks from opponents eager to say they upset one of the state’s top programs.
Most of them thrive under the fierce competition and that’s why things never seem to change for Broward’s big three.
“We always feel everyone is coming after us,” Deerfield Beach guard/forward Princess Stewart said. “It feels good because we’re the top dogs and they want to prove themselves. We know every day, we have to bring in our best game.
“This is why when I was in middle school, I was already wanting to play at Deerfield. Everyone looks at you to do things.”
