A 29-year-old man is in custody after police say he fatally stabbed his mother Monday morning at a residence in East Lake Village and then tried to kill a man at a home several miles away, officials said.

After John Wilson repeatedly stabbed his 56-year-old mother, Patricia Wilson, at an address in the 2100 block of Southeast Fern Park Drive, he is believed to have driven to a home on Oleander Avenue and forced his way in, said Port St. Lucie Police Officer Tom Nichols.

St. Lucie County sheriff’s investigators apprehended Wilson at the Oleander Avenue home, where he is accused of trying to kill Ashley Pollow for the way Pollow had treated Wilson’s girlfriend in the past, according to an arrest affidavit and a sheriff’s official.

At about 9:15 a.m., St. Lucie County Fire District crews took Patricia Wilson to St. Lucie Medical Center in grave condition. She later died.

John Wilson recently moved into his girlfriend’s two-story residence on Southeast Fern Park Drive, where the couple argued Monday morning, Nichols said.

“The argument escalated to the point where the girlfriend had called the suspect’s mother, who came over to the house,” Nichols said. “When the suspect’s mother arrived, she took the vehicle keys and put them in her pocket.”

The two argued over the keys to John Wilson’s vehicle, and the girlfriend went outside to make a phone call.

“While she was outside making a phone call, she heard a yelp,” Nichols said.

When the girlfriend returned, she saw Wilson stabbing his mother repeatedly with a kitchen knife in the back, Nichols said.

Wilson then is thought to have driven to the home in the 6400 block of Oleander Avenue, officials said.

Witnesses told sheriff’s investigators that Wilson crashed his white Mitsubishi through the front gate and forced his way into the home. He started punching Pollow and hit him in the head with a glass bowl, Wilson’s arrest affidavit states.

Pollow ran outside and Wilson ran after him. A witness got a shotgun from the garage and fired a shot in the air to try to stop the fight. A witness said Wilson and Pollow grabbed the shotgun and hit each other with it before deputies arrived.

Wilson said he tackled Pollow and tried to choke him. Wilson said he stopped only because he got hit in the head and blacked out.

“I asked Wilson if he went to the location to kill Pollow, he told me he had enough and told Pollow he was going to kill him if he did not apologize for the things he did to his girlfriend,” an affidavit states.

Wilson faces burglary and attempted murder charges following the Oleander Avenue episode. Nichols said Wilson hadn’t been arrested in connection with the death of his mother. Charges are forthcoming.

Wilson was working for Orkin Inc. as a pest control technician, said Sarah Beck, a spokeswoman for the company. He joined Orkin in September 2009 and was based out of the company’s Fort Pierce office.

Wilson met his girlfriend, who lives next door to Wilson’s sister, after he began living with his sister, said 22-year-old neighbor Nick Schwartz. Wilson eventually began dating his sister’s neighbor and moved in with her, Schwartz said.

“He’s a pretty good guy,” Schwartz said. “Didn’t expect anything like this to happen.”

Schwartz said such activity in East Lake Village is unusual.

“Didn’t hear anything this morning, wake up to caution tape outside,” he said. “Can’t believe something like this would happen in East Lake Village.”
