SUNRISE — A closer look by police at an all-male revue of nearly naked dancers at the LaBare nightclub may lead to arrests in the next few days at the controversial drinking establishment.

“There is a likelihood, or possibility, they may not be in compliance,” Police Chief John Soldenwagner said.

On Tuesday, city commissioners approved a law that bans nudity at businesses that sell booze.

LaBare, 3801 N. University Dr., will be formally notified by police of the city law and then violations could result in the arrests of dancers, owners or managers of the nightclub, Soldenwagner said. As of Thursday night, the club had not been notified and no arrests had been made.

The fine could be up to $500 and 60 days in jail.

Soldenwagner declined to say when officers would be at LaBare, other than “in the near future.”

Commissioners say the owners of LaBare have already threatened to sue the city because of the limitations on dancers.

“It would be good dollars spent,” Commissioner Roger Wishner said of the city countering any legal challenge mounted by the operators of LaBare.

Patterned after a similar law used in Fort Lauderdale, the Sunrise ordinance gives anatomical descriptions of body parts and activities prohibited, including simulated sex acts. Also, customers are not allowed to touch the dancers.

“If they continue to perform the way they are performing now, with the type of outfits they are wearing, it would be unacceptable,” Wishner said.

Commissioner Steven Feren also has acknowledged there could be problems with the skimpy bottoms worn by the male dancers, as well as reported contact between dancers and the club’s all-female customers.

Men are not allowed to enter LaBare, and Feren and Wishner said their information is second-hand.

Two weeks ago on opening night, male dancers performed in extremely small uniforms that covered vital parts in the front.

A small strap encircled the waste of the muscular dancers, with a thin strip of material in the back that reached down the bottom and up the front — much like a woman’s thong bathing suit.
