Paolo Macchiarini is an Italian thoracic surgeon who gained fame in 2008 when he transplanted a donated trachea into a 30-year-old woman named Claudia Castillo in Barcelona who had been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

This surgery was the first of its kind, and Claudia is the only known survivor. However, later surgery performed by Macchiarini on his patients led to their death. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Macchiarini was a research fraud and performed unethical surgeries on his patients.

In light of Paolo Macchiarini’s unethical medical practices and recent media attention, he became the focus of Netflix’s documentary series, “Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife Subject,” released on November 29, 2023.

Additionally, his story will take center stage in season two of Peacock’s popular drama series, “Doctor Death,” based on the renowned podcast of the same name, scheduled to premiere on December 21, 2023.

Where is He Now?

Paolo Macchiarini is presently serving a two-and-half-year sentence in a Swedish prison. Initially convicted of causing bodily harm and receiving a suspended sentence in June 2022, his punishment was later heightened to two years and six months.

This increase came after he was found guilty of gross assault against three former patients, with the incidents occurring between 2011 and 2014. His Swedish employer, the Karolinska Institutet, found him guilty of research fraud and manipulative behavior.

Medical Career

In June 2008, he conducted a groundbreaking transplant on Claudia Castillo, using a donated trachea seeded with her own stem cells.

Similar procedures were later performed on individuals such as Ciaran Finn-Lynch, Keziah Shorten, an unnamed Russian woman, Andemariam Teklesenbet Beyene, Christopher Lyles, Yulia Tuulik, Alexander Zozulya, Yesim Cetir, Hannah Warren, Sadiq Kanaan, and Dmitri Onogda.

The surgeries involved various methods, including synthetic tracheas and seeding with the patient’s own cells. Some cases were successful, while others experienced complications and, in unfortunate instances, resulted in the patients’ deaths.

The surgeries aimed to address tracheal conditions such as cancer, congenital defects, and injuries, but the outcomes varied, raising ethical and medical concerns.

Regarding Macchiarini’s educational background, he studied at the Medical School of the University of Pisa (UniPi), where he earned his medical degree and master of surgery in 1986 and 1991, respectively.

Personal Life

Paolo Macchiarini, aside from his professional life, has been implicated as a liar. In 1986, he married Emanuela Pecchia, and they share two children. Additionally, he has a daughter from a relationship with Ana Paula Bernardes, which ended in 2016 due to Macchiarini’s involvement with NBC News producer Benita Alexander.

During a documentary production in 2013, Macchiarini allegedly lied about being a surgeon to celebrities and made false claims about planned wedding extravagances, such as having Pope Francis officiate—a statement later refuted by the Pope’s spokesman.
