A married couple who immigrated from Israel more than three decades ago have introduced this fast-casual Middle Eastern/Israeli eatery in the former Eat the Tea.
“Just like in Israel, we wanted to give our costumers the taste of our homemade hummus,” says Muli Shalmi, a chef whose wife is Ellen. “In Israel, they called a place like ours ‘hummusia.’ You can find them [on] every corner. In the past, we have owned a traditional Israeli restaurant mostly known for its grilled meats. With the Hummus House, we wanted to create that same authentic taste but with healthier options that could also cater to vegetarian and vegan clientele.”
Highlights include falafel with tahini sauce ($4.99), Moroccan spring roll ($5.95), falafel pita pocket ($9), mushroom hummus bowl ($11.50), Mediterranean salad ($11.95) and meatless shawarma hummus bowl ($12.50).
Last bites are baklava and malabi, a rosewater pudding (both $3.95).
A lime-green awning and turquoise French doors beckon inside to an urban, industrial vibe with natural woods, painted brick, faux grass wall and chalkboard menus. Seating is available on the sidewalk and back porch on the dock overlooking a canal.
Lunch and dinner are served daily, closing early on Sundays at 5 p.m. Monthly live Israeli music is planned.
