Club Cinema in Pompano Beach (3251 N. Federal Highway, 954-785-5224; clubcinemaflorida.com) opened last year on the site of the old Pompano Cinema, and has spent its brief life hosting everything from private events to concerts to boxing. But when the Strokes perform at the 2,500-capacity venue on Sunday night, it won’t quite be business as usual. The Strokes’ show is the first at Club Cinema to be presented by West Palm Beach-based Fantasma Productions, one of the biggest U.S. concert promoters not owned by Live Nation (formerly Clear Channel).
Club Cinema general manager John Mecoli says Fantasma will also promote an Oct. 12 Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert there. But Mecoli says Club Cinema’s future isn’t — and couldn’t be — strictly in live music. “You have to have other avenues to keep the revenue coming in,” he says. So there’s more boxing on tap, lots of live reggae, a Halloween fetish party, a Brazilian beauty pageant and perhaps a few weddings and corporate events. With 30,000 square feet of space, four levels, 10 bars, a wraparound indoor balcony, high-tech sound and lighting, and a full kitchen, “It kind of reminds me of a House of Blues on steroids,” says Mecoli.
