The Boynton Beach City Library is encouraging residents to take home and share books with its newly opened three Little Libraries.
Placed throughout the city, visitors can enjoy the unique style of book sharing at Barrier Free Park, 3111 S. Congress Ave.; Sara Sims Park, 209 NW Ninth Court; and Oceanfront Park Beach, 6415 N. Ocean Blvd.
Inspired by the city of Lake Worth’s extensive Little Free Libraries community, Boynton Beach City Library director Craig Clark, City Commissioner Christina Romelus, who received a large donation of books from one of her neighbors, and Recreation and Parks director Kacy Young all partnered to launch the city’s own program. Lake Worth is home to over 100 different Little Libraries.
“I encourage people to take advantage of the free program,” Clark said. “It’s advantageous for maybe people who can’t go out and afford a book or make it to the library. So, if you’re there, feel free to take a few books. There are lots of kids’ books in there as well so we have books for kids, teens and adults.”
“They don’t have to donate. They can just take,” Clark said. “The idea is to share. I think the Little Libraries program envokes a feeling of being part of a community. It’s a win-win project for the public and our library. It encourages reading and sharing within our community.
With the hopes of potentially expanding the program, volunteers may need to become involved to help the Little Libraries grow in numbers as well as maintain their upkeep.
“I think there is hope that it’s going to expand,” Clark said. “I think if we do expand it we’re going to have to probably bring on some volunteers to kind of manage it because it is a bit time-consuming. But, like I said it’s a win-win for the library and the community so I think it could be a dual role, head up by volunteers and library staff as well.”
