More than 300 supporters helped raise almost $200,000 for Holy Cross Hospital’s Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center at its recent Epicurean Escapade: A Food & Wine Experience benefit.

The event, staged at the Design Center of the Americas in Dania Beach, featured gourmet food and wine pairings from Japan, Mexico, the Northwest U.S. and the South. Former Miami Dolphin and current sportscaster and radio host Jimmy Cefalo was the event’s emcee.

Proceeds will pay for health care services offered at the Fort Lauderdale center, said Lynn Mandeville, the hospital’s director of development.

“This year, we recognized those who helped us build the [center]. They understand the need the center meets in the community, and they support it,” she said.

The Mangurian Center opened three years ago to serve as a comprehensive treatment facility for women. The 55,000-square-foot facility, built with $15 million in private donations, provides a range of medical specialties, as well as therapeutic and diagnostic services, including mammography, ultrasound and biopsies. It also features a medical spa, counseling rooms, an art gallery and a conference center often used by local nonprofits.

Patty Resnick appreciates the care she received there after her physician conducted an annual mammogram and ultrasound to detect breast cancer. He ordered a follow-up biopsy to be done there. It showed her to be cancer-free, and she said the experience was reassuring.

“They booked me for the very next day after my doctor’s visit, which saved me a lot of worrying and waiting, and it’s a very beautiful facility with a nice atmosphere. And there’s more of a personal feel — all of the people there are very caring, and my patient coordinator was wonderful,” said Resnick, of Weston.

The center is part of a wider hospital effort to deliver improved services to women, Mandeville said. A remodeling of the maternity unit has begun and is being phased in to minimize disruptions. As part of the multi-million-dollar renovation, expected to be completed in the fall, all patient rooms are being converted into private suites, she said.
