Q: How will turnpike officials collect tolls from visitors who drive rental cars if they eliminate cash tolls and collect all tolls electronically, either with SunPass or by photographing license plates and sending drivers a bill in the mail for the tolls?
– Joel Garfinkel, Coconut Creek
A: Turnpike officials have agreements with Avis, Alamo, National, Budget, Hertz Advantage, Dollar Thrifty, Sunshine, Global Rent A Car and Penske Truck Leasing so the turnpike can bill the rental companies for tolls you incur while driving one of their cars.
Some companies charge their customers a daily or weekly fee, plus the cost of the tolls. Others provide unlimited tolls for a set per-day or per-week amount.
Officials urge customers to check with their rental company to see how they may be charged.
If you don’t sign up for the rental company’s toll program, a bill for the tolls will be sent to the company, which will then match the toll charges with the person renting the car. While the rental company will pay the toll bill on your behalf, you may be charged extra fees for their time and service. The same thing applies if you rent a car from a company that doesn’t participate in the program.
Q: A traffic signal on Griffin Road and Southwest 28th Avenue in Dania Beach is flashing red in all directions after midnight. I always thought a flashing red light should be treated as a four-way stop. Am I wrong?
– Wayne Marshall, Fort Lauderdale
A: Flashing red signals should be treated as a stop sign. A yellow flashing light means you may proceed, with caution.
Q: Northeast 26th Street east of Middle River Drive in Fort Lauderdale has been closed for some time. Can you find out why, and when it will reopen?
– Jim Song, Fort Lauderdale
A: The city of Fort Lauderdale made emergency road repairs. The street reopened on Wednesday.
Two things were done. First, the city installed two “speed tables” to slow traffic on 26th Street between Middle River and Bayview drives. A speed table is similar to a speed hump. Both rise from the pavement, but the speed table is flat in the middle and smoother for vehicles to drive over, whereas the hump is rounded.
Second, crews repaired the concrete holding the brick pavers at the entrance to the neighborhood off 26th just east of Middle River.
