On Wednesday morning, Dr. Robert Jay Fish was a little-known dentist tucked in a cream-colored medical office building in west Broward.

Then word leaked out that he had been hired to investigate a mark on the body of Nicole Brown Simpson, O.J. Simpson’s slain ex-wife. Calls from the local and national media inundated his office.

By Thursday morning, Fish had attained celebrity status.

Two teens on their way to school even stopped him as he walked his dog and asked for his autograph.

“It’s an intrusion,” said Fish, 47. “But it’s been quite an experience.”

However, attorney F. Lee Bailey, who is working for O.J. Simpson, said on Thursday evening that Fish is not on the case.

“He was told by my office and by [defense attorney Robert) Shapiro’s office that ‘We have no interest in your services,'” Bailey said.

Fish heard about the case through one of Bailey’s friends, Bailey said.

“[Fish) contacted me, claiming to have important information,” Bailey said. “It did not pan out. He has hounded the office here, asking for money and materials. The man is written off.”

Fish has a different story. Fish said Bailey called him in late July asking for help.

“He said they have a suspicious mark, would I be interested in reviewing it,” Fish said.

The mark was on the back of the neck of Nicole Brown Simpson, Fish said he was told. Fish declined to describe or discuss the mark, saying he doesn’t want to prejudice the case.

“I have been asked to characterize, to categorize what this mark is,” Fish said.

Fish said he is a forensic dentist who has given expert testimony in the past on evidence such as bite marks. Forensic dentists help interpret evidence in court.

To show that he is working on the case, Fish produced autopsy photos of Nicole Brown Simpson and a July 26 letter from Shapiro asking for his help.

Bailey said the letter and photos were sent before Fish was told his services were not needed.

When told of Bailey’s comments, Fish said Bailey is wrong.

“Nobody’s told me I’m not on the case,” Fish said. “I don’t know that Lee Bailey is up to snuff on what’s going on in this case.”

Fish said he has been reporting to private investigators working for Simpson’s defense team, but he declined to provide their phone numbers.

Fish, born and raised in Ohio, moved to Florida in 1973 and is a licensed Florida dentist, according to state records. He lives in Coral Springs, has a 7-year-old son, coaches Little League and pilots small planes.

Simpson, 47, is charged will murder in connection with the June 12 slashing deaths of his ex-wife and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Sept. 26.
