Two officers injured while chasing driver

Two police officers were injured Saturday evening while chasing a man near the intersection of Military Trail and Northlake Boulevard, said Palm Beach Gardens police spokesman Jack Schnur.

A gunshot was fired during the chase, but it was not immediately clear who shot the gun or whether it caused any of the injuries, Schnur said. Both officers were treated at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and one was released, Schnur said.

According to Schnur, the officers had responded to a call about a car crash about 6:15 p.m., when they found a 21-year-old white man revving his truck engine in a median, where the truck was stuck. When the officers approached, the man fled.

Several people tackled the man at a nearby supermarket, Schnur said, and he was taken into custody.

Port St. Lucie teen dies after car hits concrete pole

A 17-year-old driver was killed Saturday when his two-door Honda Civic went out of control and smashed into a concrete telephone pole in west Boca Raton.

Jonathan Wayne Cooper, of Port St. Lucie, was driving east on Palmetto Park Road, just west of Riverside Drive, about 3:45 p.m. when the accident occurred, said Palm Beach County Sheriff’s spokesman Paul Miller. No one else was in the car with him, Miller said.

Cooper was transported to Delray Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:17 p.m.

Cooper had been in the area with his mother visiting a friend, Miller said. The accident backed up traffic on Palmetto Park Road for several hours, Miller said.
