Coral Springs’ Continental Golf Club pro Jeff Valliere headed the winning team in the Southern Chapter of the South Florida PGA Section-conducted pro-amateur tournament held Oct. 4 at Pompano Beach Municipal Course.
Amateur players Tony Vacca, Hal Heffernan and Mike Morrison assisted Valliere in posting a 124, net two best balls of the foursome.
Finishing second with a 127 were pro Brent Whittaker of Biltmore Golf Course, Coral Gables and teammates Ray Ferri, Jim O’Bryan and Steve Schmidt. Third with a 129 was Bruce Lehnard of Fairfax, Va., with Jim Dodd, Bob Riechman and Dick Kneer.
There was a three-way tie at 130 for pro Roger Kennedy of Pompano Beach and teammates Billy Hall, Tom Soitys and Jim Von Ainsky; Raintree Golf Course, Pembroke Pines, pro Marty Maisa with Jim Santucci, Jay Young and Dick Kee; and Wes Smith of Emerald Hills Country Club in Hollywood with Don Martin, J.R. Rodriguez and Ralph Carr.
Blair Gibson of Hillcrest Country Club, Hollywood, was the low pro with 68, followed by Bob Leaver of Winston-Salem, N.C., John Nelson of Inverrary Country Club in Lauderhill, Michael O’Brien of Fort Lauderdale Country Club and Dan Wilkins of Emerald Hills Country Club in Hollywood, each with a 71. Greg Cerulli of Club Med Sandpiper in Port St. Lucie, and Jim Weeden of Boca Del Mar Country Club in Boca Raton, tied for third with a 72.
Golf with Dave’s wife
Lorraine Thomas, wife of Wendy’s President Dave Thomas, will be the celebrity player at the Arthritis Foundation’s women’s golf tournament, Swing Against Arthritis, Oct. 26 at Palm-Aire Country Club in Pompano Beach.
Entry fee is $70 per person (deadline is Oct. 23) for the four-person scramble event. Shotgun start is 9 a.m. followed by a luncheon that will include prizes for the top three foursomes, raffles and two round-trip tickets to any destination American Airlines services in the United States.
