Warning: Adult 18+ Content Follows Down Below!
Deus Machina Demonbane (Zanma Taisei Demonbane)
Best Adult Visual Novels
If H.P. Lovecraft, Cthulhu, and giant robots are your thing, then Deus Machina Demonbane is a great start into adult visual novels.
Set in an alternate universe in Arkham City, Daijuuji Kurou is thrust into a horrific world of supernatural intrigue as he searches for a way to save Arkham and the world.
As a game Deus Machina Demonbane is light on interactivity. Like most adventure games there are choices to be made, but beyond that the player experiences this one via reading.
There are indeed bad endings, but they’re pretty easy to avoid. The visuals and music are what make this game a stellar example of an immersive visual novel.
With a twisted aesthetic worthy of the Lovecraftian allusion, this is a game worth investing the dozens of hours necessary to experience it all.
And yes, this is an adult game. There isn’t just gore, but plenty of sex. Fortunately, rather than being a “reward” such as the case with HuniePop it works with the romantic subplots of the game.
Deus Machina Demonbane doesn’t pull its punches with its story or its visuals, so be prepared for an excellent mecha-Cthulhu-themed epic available from JASTUSA (NSFW).
Saya no Uta (Song of Saya)
Best Adult Visual Novels
While we’re on the topic of Lovecraftian horror, let’s take a look at a prime example of horror in visual novels.
Even if the game didn’t feature anything explicitly sexual it would receive an ‘M’ rating, possibly even ‘Ao’ for the sheer quantity of horrific scenes. Saya no Uta deals with some intensely disturbing ideas, none of which are anything close to family-friendly.
The protagonist, Fuminori Sakisaka, ends up in a car accident that kills his parents and leaves him in critical condition. He undergoes experimental surgery and survives, but as an unexpected side-effect now views the world through a terrifying lens.
This is not a game to Google in the company of squeamish others. This is also not an adult visual novel to play if you yourself are rather weak at the site of blood.
Saya no Uta plays with wonderful themes of mental illness in a brutally scary way. If horror is your shtick, then this is your jam. Just…don’t play it at night. With the curtains closed. And the headphones on.
And the sound up. JASTUSA’s got it, and so does Amazon, but be warned that these are links for adult games and most likely NSFW.
Hanachirasu
Best Adult Visual Novels
Taking a sharp left turn out of Amityville is Hanachirasu. This is a fantastic adult visual novel gem in every sense of the word. Hanachirasu isn’t a long game; at most, it’ll take less than 10 hours to read through everything.
But its quality, like many short visual novels, is unquestionable.
Hanachirasu doesn’t limit the player in terms of protagonist. It’s there to tell a story about the samurai ideal in the modern day and age, and it does it well.
Against a backdrop of corporate villainy and honor, this is a traditional story of revenge that plays out beautifully in its tragedy.
This one’s available from JASTUSA, and is currently set to be released on the 10th of March.
Deardrops
Best Adult Visual Novels
Visual novels, like regular paperbacks, deal with a very wide variety of subject material. Deardrops elects to touch upon garage bands.
Heavily influenced by classic rock ‘n roll and indie music, Deardrops is as emotionally moving as it is musically fantastic.
Some of the situations aren’t exactly common. It isn’t every day that a dropout from the professional classical music scene comes home to work at a dive bar, but the situations of the everday life are pretty run of the mill.
Deardrops doesn’t feature everymen or average Joe’s; it’s about incredibly talented people. That’s not what’s relatable about it, but what is are the simple facts of life and the drudgery of the routine they find themselves in.
Every time they explode at each other is another reminder that everyone has feelings and emotions that get in the way of what they really want from life.
Deardrops comes from Mangagamer; this site is 100% NSFW, so enter at your own risk.
ef – a fairy tale of the two
Best Adult Visual Novels
Finally, the first straightforward romance on the list. You’d think a bunch of adult visual novels would include a bit more of these, bu-huh? This isn’t a straightforward romance? *sigh*
ef is by and large a romance. Where it differs from traditional romances is the way the story is told. The drama, the mystery, and the tragedy aren’t anything new.
The taste for the epic that comes in its pacing, its supernatural elements, and its characters are definitely something unique. ef – a fairy tale of the two is absolutely a cut above the rest of the romance visual novels out there, and not just ’cause the sex is good (it actually does nothing divergent in this regard).
ef is unquestionably one of the most beautiful games in existence. Not even backgrounds are spared the loving touch of gorgeousness, and if this seems like an exaggeration: it isn’t.
Minori is rather well-known for their attention to detail not only in their characters and writing but also in their scenery and storytelling techniques. If you’ve noticed eden* for sale on Steam, ef blows it out of the water (and eden* is doing pretty well).
ef is also available in two parts from Mangagamer or as a physical combo package.
Kara no Shoujo
Best Adult Visual Novels
Instead of ending on a delightful note, we’ll bring your attention to one of the most gruesome detective stories on the market. If 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors was your thing, this game is right up your alley.
Kara no Shoujo features a particular brand of detective story. Set in the aftermath of WWII Japan, it’s taste for noir and intrigue are paced by its gore and grit.
Kara no Shoujo features a single protagonist who works as a private investigator. It also features a heavy gameplay focus.
The player must actively pursue the correct leads in cases, track information, monitor the connections between the parties, and based on their choices achieve one of a group of very different endings, not all of which are favorable.
Tragedy and regret are the themes of Kara no Shoujo. Available from Mangagamer, check it out if you’re looking for an excellent detective story that definitely requires a logical mind.
Cartagra ~ Affliction of the Soul~
Best Adult Visual Novels
Cartagra actually functions as a prequel to Kara no Shoujo, helping to broaden your understanding of the characters and world before jumping into the chapter in this visual novel series.
In Cartagra you play Takashiro Shugo, a man who used to be a police detective, but now earns a living as a private detective.
He’s now based out of the brothel Yukishiro, taking cases here and there. Things change when his former superior contacts him about a missing person case, that turns out to be so much more than Takashiro could have guessed.
Kara No Shoujo had many different choices and paths to find, whereas Cartagra features a much simpler and easy to uncover story. The same tones and themes that Kara no Shoujo uses are present in Cartagra, with just as many dark and gory moments as you’d expect.
It’s a rare detective story that keeps intrigue high, and has some loose links to Kara No Shoujo. Playing both titles is definitely going to make the experience more meaningful.
You can pick it up off of MangaGamer, of course, be aware the site is NSFW.
Fate/Stay Night
Best Adult Visual Novels
Most people know Fate/Stay Night from the super popular anime series that’s been running for a few years. However, the franchise originally started as adult visual novels on PC.
Don’t play this one if you aren’t in it for the long haul though, as three separate paths create a ton of varied playtime.
Fate/Stay Night focuses on a fighting tournament called The Fifth Holy Grail War, where powerful people called masters fight with Heroes in order to get a chance at the Holy Grail.
There’s a ton of lore and setup done by the game, which has, in turn, helped launch a successful franchise. Basically, there’s plenty of engaging stories and interesting characters to be had in the adult visual novels genre.
Yes, Fate/Stay Night did start as an Eroge title, but the sex is more tied to the story than anything.
The scenes play out naturally, at times that make sense in the context of the story, not necessarily as a reward for the player.
Because of this, you’re really playing the title for the tale it tells, and even if you know the series well, it might be interesting to see where it all started.
Grisaia no Kaijutsu (The Fruit of Grisaia)
Best Adult Visual Novels
Grisaia has a bit of a unique setup, and is mostly focused on drama and romance. You play the role of Yuji Kazumi who has just transferred to Mihama Academy.
The catch is that the school is built like a prison and only has five other female students that attend it.
Now it certainly sounds like a setup, but Grisaia, like many visual novels, has a huge emphasis on dialogue and story.
There’s certainly a ton of it to uncover as well, as each of the five girls has a branching story path to explore with multiple endings. You’ll need to play through multiple times, in order to see everything.
There are adult scenes implemented in the game, but they’re few and far between, compared to the sheer amount of dialogue you’ll be getting. If you’re interested in the characters, there was also a 13-episode anime that was produced.
You can find this one on Steam, still with adult themes.
Katawa Shoujo
Best Adult Visual Novels
Katawa Shoujo isn’t quite as adult as other titles, as it’d be considered “light” on its adult content, but we’d still put it in the adult visual novels category.
What certainly it does have is a unique concept that’s treated with the utmost care and respect. You play as Hisao Nikai, a student whose life dramatically changes after suffering a heart attack from a long-dormant disease.
He starts going to Yamaku High School for disabled, where he meets five girls who also attend the school.
The gameplay is choice-driven, and most of the story focuses on Hisao and his relationship with each of the five girls. The subject matter is incredibly well-handled and conducive to the story itself.
The soft-core romance scenes only help expand the character’s personalities even more, and much of Katawa Shoujo focuses on each of the characters, especially Hisao, coming to grips with their life.
This is certainly one emotional and thoughtful visual novel, that’s easy to get into. Even better, you can actually download this one from its official site for free.
Utawarerumono
Best Adult Visual Novels
Utawarerumono is a visual novel with a twist, employing a tactical battle system for parts of the game. You play as Hakuoro, a masked stranger with amnesia that is found knocked out in a forest, by a family with two young girls.
He’s cared for by the family, and before long is even accepted into the village, but finds out that the village is being controlled by a greedy emperor.
There’s actually two parts to the story with the first seeing Hakurou leading a rebellion, and the second having Hakurou try and maintain peace as the new emperor. The game is a mix of traditional fantasy with science-fiction, and has some really surprising twists by the end.
The battle system of Utawarerumono is quite similar to something like Disgaea or Final Fantasy Tactics, having you move character around a grid and attack or use abilities.
There are choices in the game, however, they have little impact on the overall story which takes a decided path. Like many of the other titles here, the sex scenes in the game are integrated into the story and aren’t’ the focal point of the game.
There’s still plenty of reading and dialogue to get through, but if you’re looking for one of those visual novels with just a little more meat to it, Utawarerumono may be a good choice.
Tsukihime
Best Adult Visual Novels
Tsukihime is an older visual novel released in 2000, and then adapted into an anime and manga starting in 2003. It was widely regarded for having a hugely expansive and engrossing storyline, mostly told through text representing dilaogue between characters and the protagonist’s inner monologue.
You play as Shiki Tohno, a high school student who suffered a life-threatening injury when he was younger.
After surviving the event he gains the ability to see “Death Lines,” lines that show constant breaking corresponding to when things will die.
This ability starts to wear on his mind, especially when he learns that he can cut and affect these lines.
The plot advances and Tohno begins to encounter supernatural enemies like Vampires, and has to use his power in order to survive. The game has multiple branching paths and choices, resulting in some wildly varied outcomes.
The more adult aspects of the game only come through later on, as the supernatural and mysterious storyline definitely takes precedence. We couldn’t not include this in our list of the best adult visual novels.
Brave Soul
Best Adult Visual Novels
Brave Soul is a fairly lengthy RPG, that combines elements of visual novels and turn-based battle systems. It’s a fantasy heavy game set in a world similar to medieval Earth, but with magic mixed in.
You play as a young boy who was raised in the countryside of Sovenia. With your dragon companion shell at your side, you decide to become a Hunter, a mercenary who accepts various different jobs.
Brave Soul does feature combat and RPG elements, unlike many other visual novels.
You’ll build a party, buy equipment and items, battle enemies in turn-based combat, and even accept missions from the Hunters Guild. There’s more room to do what you want than the average visual novel.
Like many visual novels, Brave Soul is heavy on story, really heavy. The tale revolves around your main character and a recurring dreams he’s had about a “Moon Goddess.”
There are six girls that you meet across your journey and can romance, although the main story is the main draw of the title. The good news is, the RPG elements and storytelling are almost always put before the adult content.
Character development and plot is paramount to the experience, making this one of those easy adult novels to get into. You can find it on Amazon currently.
Shuffle!
Best Adult Visual Novels
Shuffle! Has seen quite a few different adaptations over the years, with various games and other media. The title started out as an adult visual novel on PC, before getting an all-ages release on PS2, and subsequently two different manga and anime adaptations.
Shuffle! Takes place in a fictional world where humans and gods live in harmony together.
These gods are separated into two types, ones that resemble humans and others that have more pointed ears and are known as Devils.
Despite having obvious connotations, both types are actually quite friendly, and have been immigrating to the human world ever since a portal between all the worlds popped up suddenly.
The title is a school-based romance visual novel, that has you playing as a normal 17 year old boy interacting with other students, both human and god.
Most of the game consists of the typical visual novel style, lots of reading and selecting answers. Every now and then a section called “Please select your destiny” will pop up, tasking the main character with making a decision that will change who his destined significant other will be.
The “adult” content in the game only takes place at the very end, depending on who you end up with. Because of this, Shuffle! Is yet another visual novel much more focused on the characters and experience.
There’s definitely an interesting setting and dynamic to be found here too, with the peaceful existence of humans and gods. You can currently purchase Shuffle! on Steam.
The Shadows of Pygmalion
Best Adult Visual Novels
The Shadows of Pygmalion is one of the Yuri visual novels, so its cast is almost entirely made up of women. The adult scenes, once again, are simply placed throughout the story, which involves quite a bit of reading.
Pygmalion takes place in an alternate earth where mysterious beings called “puppets,” live invisibly among humans and alter the course of history.
You play as Hajiro Mina, a typical highschool girl that has a chance encounter with a puppet, that alters the course of her life. She gains the ability to see puppets and gains other supernatural powers along with it.
Mina is forcibly made a member of a shady organization that eliminates puppets, where the meets and begins to forge relationships with other members.
The Shadows of Pygmalion contains a dark story, that constantly keeps you second guessing the truth of things. It also features full voice acting and is relatively safe for an Eroge game, as the adult themes are significantly toned down.
You can pick it up from MangaGamer or Steam, just keep in mind that MangaGamer is very NSFW.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When They Cry)
Best Adult Visual Novels
While most of the visual novels on this list feature gratuitous amounts of sex and violence in some cases, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is more about the violent killing sprees you’ll eventually happen upon.
It’s also about the intricately woven narrative that you’ll thrill to watch unfold as you visit the town of Hinamizawa and get to know the students who comprise its main cast.
The tale of a cursed village that seemingly drives its inhabitants to paranoid, murderous rampages is one that’ll stick with you long after you finish each route, rife with nightmare fuel of the highest caliber.
You’ll be drawn in slowly at first with what looks like the promise of an idyllic school-based harem tale where male protagonist Keiichi seems to be fawned on by several of his female classmate, but you’ll end up staying for the madness that nearly every scene is positively drenched in.
Make sure you play through each route to unlock every piece of the puzzle that makes up the full story, and then go watch its anime companion and its second season Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai to make sure you’re not left in the dark.
You’ll be glad that you did.
Rewrite
Best Adult Visual Novels
Developer Key has several adult-oriented visual novels under its belt, and if you’ve played the rest of their titles, you’ll want to seek out Rewrite, one of the more difficult to follow adventures, for its complex narrative.
Following Kotaro Tennouji, a high school student growing up in the city of Kazamatsuri, it revolves around the lively Occult Club. Kotarou hangs out with the students in the Occult Club, who handle cases revolving around the paranormal.
Kotaro has a special ability known as “Rewrite,” just like the title, that lets him permanently alter and modify any part of his body right down to his blood.
The only problem is that each time he does this, he uses up a little bit of his life force. Eventually this will cause him to become a familiar.
After joining the Occult Research Society, Kotaro begins investigating paranormal events in Kazamatsuri with the girls in the club, though it ultimately ends up that Kotaro becomes locked in a battle between two warring factions: Gaia and Guardian.
Ultimately, there are several paths the visual novel will take, with most if not all ending in humanity’s absolute destruction. Sounds like an excellent weekend play, right?
That does it for our list of the best adult visual novels! If you’re looking for other visual novels, you can find our list of PS4 visual novels here and Xbox One visual novels here.
