Round two of Chef Gordon Ramsay’s South Florida restaurant remake tour airs Friday on Fox TV’s “Kitchen Nightmares.”
Next up is Anna Vincenzo’s, a 10-year-old Italian restaurant in Boca Raton, owned by Concetta Menna. Ramsay came to Boca in the middle of July to help Menna reinvent her eatery, which is named after her maternal grand parents Anna and Vincenzo.
Menna, who grew up in her father’s Queens, N.Y. restaurant (Angelo’s in Richmond Hill), wasn’t exactly surprised when she saw the episode being promoted by Fox with a tagline that goes something like this: “A chef better at fighting than she is at cooking”
Q: How did the taping go?
Ask anyone who owns a restaurant and they’ll tell you it’s your life. It’s part of you. So to have somebody come in and tell you what to do, it’s like someone came into your house and took everything apart and said this isn’t good.
Q: How’s business?
We never had any issues, but the past two years with the recession, we’re hurting like everyone else. It’s been tough. But it is what it is. We still have our doors open. We’re still operating business as usual.
Q: It must have been difficult to be criticized by Ramsay.
TV creates a lot of drama and they like that. Drama’s good for ratings and boy did they get the drama. I’m a very emotional Italian woman, so I spoke from the heart. Me and him butted heads a lot. I’m not defending myself, but I’ve been in the business for 10 years and that has something to say about something, considering how many restaurants go in and out of business.
Q: Are you glad you did it?
I did learn how TV actually works. I wasn’t 100 percent naive but I really did think reality TV was more about reality.
Q: So why did you do it?
I did it for the publicity. I did it because Gordon Ramsay is this world-renowned chef. I thought they were going to come in and help me with marketing ideas. I don’t know how it’s going to come out. I know I’m going to be portrayed as a raging lunatic. I’m pretty sure about that.
Q: Did he really try to teach you how to make lasagna?
That was the nail in the coffin for me. “You’re going to teach me how to make lasagna? You’re Scottish. I’m Italian and you’re going to teach me how to make lasagna? You couldn’t think of anything else you could teach me to cook besides lasagna? You could teach me how to make soup.” I don’t even know what Scottish people make. But lasagna?
Q: Why did you name your restaurant after your grandparents?
My grandmother used to kid me. “When I die, you’re not going to remember my name.” She passed away in 1991. I figured if it named it after her, her name would be mentioned every day, if not by me, then by others. That’s part of the reason I feel so attached to it.
