My Project
The Sequoyah Book Award helps promote reading in our school by providing a list of the best books of the year for young people to explore. Students who read three titles off the list are eligible to vote for the winner when the polls open each March. The fact that this award is student-chosen gives students a sense of ownership and agency that encourages them to develop decision skills. It also provides the perfect opportunity for teens to discuss books and reading with their peers.
The Sequoyah selection process helps students develop a love of leisure reading, which is important for lifelong learning.
Reading quality fiction helps students improve the literacy skills they need for their future studies.
