The track at Miramar’s Ansin Sports Complex was on full display for residents at its Saturday grand opening.
The $15 million complex, at 10801 Miramar Blvd., features the same type of track used during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. The complex is also home to several other sports, including football, soccer, basketball, cricket and netball. A 9,000-square-foot community center with computer labs and a game room is joined by a 5,000-square-foot covered children’s playground.
“It’s a pleasure to be here and dedicate this beautiful complex,” said Ed Ansin during the opening ceremony for the complex that bears his family’s name.
The 24 acres that comprise the sports complex were once part of the massive tracts of land owned by the Ansin family. Ansin said his family began purchasing land in 1951 and eventually ended up with almost 2,000 acres. Large portions of that land were developed into the Miramar Park of Commerce. When the city wanted to build a new athletics center, Ansin said the family agreed to donate the land and assist with construction costs.
As someone with an interest in sports, Ansin said he was pleased the complex would offer a variety of sports for residents.
“The more sports, the better,” Ansin said. “Different people have different interests.”
Following the community center’s ribbon cutting, the track was inaugurated with a torch relay featuring local schools, former Olympians and athletes from the Junior and Special Olympics.
